In Litchfield Park, Arizona, the Wildlife World Zoo is addressing a tragic outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza that led to the deaths of five animals. Officials from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health confirmed the presence of the virus, which has previously been detected in wild birds across the United States since 2015.
The affected animals included a cheetah, a mountain lion, a swamphen, an Andean goose, and a kookaburra. A white tiger also tested positive but is reportedly responding well to treatment. Zoo President Kristy Hayden expressed gratitude for the quick action and collaboration with health and agriculture authorities, saying, “We are grateful that the impact was limited thanks to our swift response, robust biosecurity protocols, and the invaluable Support of Maricopa County Department of Public Health and state and federal agencies.”
While the risk to the public is considered low, the zoo is taking precautions to prevent further spread. Guest interactions involving direct animal contact have been temporarily suspended, and stringent safety measures, such as protective gear and disinfectant protocols, are in place for staff working closely with the animals.
Experts note that avian flu is highly transmissible among birds and other animals, often spreading during migration through bird droppings. However, human infections are rare and typically require prolonged, close contact with infected animals.
Dr. Nick Staab of the Maricopa County Department of Public Health emphasized the limited risk to visitors: “The public visiting the zoo is not at risk.”
The zoo is closely monitoring its remaining animals, keeping those with potential exposure in quarantine. No new positive cases have been reported in the past week, signaling that the outbreak may be under control.
