Watch the Daring Rescue of a Baby Elephant in Kenya! [VIDEO]

Let’s give it up for the amazing staff of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, who saved the life of an elephant calf after she found herself in a desperate situation!

The wildlife protection group received a call about Mbegu the calf on May 15. After a tragic human-animal conflict incident in Kenya’s Naibunga Conservancy, in which a local woman had been killed by a member of Mbegu’s herd, the calf was in serious danger.

As a result of the fracas, she had become separated from her herd, and a group of local people had begun to chase and torment her. Without swift intervention, Mbegu would certainly not have escaped alive.

Wardens of the Naibunga Conservancy, as well as the DSWT rescue team, soon arrived on the scene and attempted to calm members of the community, who were sadly “baying for (Mbegu’s) blood” in retaliation for recent events.

DSWT staff said, “She had experienced imaginable trauma that day, and was extremely lucky to still be alive, all thanks to the swift work of a Naibunga Conservancy warden called Peter. She responded to the tender loving care that she received from our team of keepers and fed well, clearly dehydrated by this time.”

Luckily, Mbegu was able to live out the rest of her days in DSWT’s dedicated elephant sanctuary, in companionship with other elephants. While human-elephant conflict is a complex and growing problem in a large number of African countries, as well as India, we can at least be comforted by Mbegu’s incredible story of hope and survival!
