Petnow, a tech company specializing in pet identification, has introduced a new AI-powered platform designed to help keep pets safe. Founded in 2018 by Jesse Joonho Lim, the company aims to replace traditional pet identification methods such as microchips, tags, and collars with a more advanced system. The Petnow app uses a smartphone camera to scan dogs’ nose prints and cats’ facial features, creating a biometric profile that is used for identification.
Recognized for its groundbreaking approach, Petnow was awarded “Best of Innovation” at the 2022 CES Innovation Awards. The app, which is free to use, is currently available in 16 countries, including Australia and New Zealand. Petnow claims an impressive 99.9% accuracy rate in identifying pets through its deep-learning technology, which extracts unique biometric data.
Petnow’s system is designed to assist in reuniting lost pets with their humans. If a pet goes missing, the app sends out alerts to the local community and allows users to report sightings or scan other pets’ nose prints to verify identity. It also includes a community feature called PetWay, where users can help track down lost animals in their area.
To get started with Petnow, pet parents need to create a profile for their dog or cat within the app. The setup process involves uploading five photos of the pet, along with details such as breed, sex, and date of birth. Next, users must perform a biometric scan by moving their phone’s camera around their pet’s nose (for dogs) or face (for cats) in a well-lit area. Once the scan is complete, the pet’s biometric data is registered and stored, ready to be used for identification if needed.
Though Petnow offers a promising alternative to microchips, it’s still a relatively new technology, with its app launching in 2023. There is currently limited feedback available in terms of case studies or testimonials, making it difficult to assess how well it performs compared to traditional pet identification methods. Additionally, while Petnow claims user data is safe, details about how privacy is protected are not explicitly provided.
