Apple TV+ has released a new Climate change drama series, ‘Extrapolations’, which features a star-studded cast including Meryl Streep, Kit Harington, and Marion Cotillard, among others.

The series tells eight interconnected stories that examine the future of our environment from 2037 to 2070. Creator Scott Z. Burns, who wrote the screenplay for ‘Contagion’, presents the series with the same level of seriousness and weight, as well as a similar eeriness of predicting the future. The series uses the backdrop of Climate change and explores the consequences of human actions that lead to the degradation of the planet’s environment. The show raises awareness of the impact of Climate change, but it lacks depth and nuance in its character development, making it dry and preachy.
One of the episodes in the series tells the story of a rabbi trying to save his Miami temple from rising sea levels, which gives the show an opportunity to engage in philosophical arguments about the sins of man. Another episode features a scientist trying to save what might be the last humpback whale on Earth, which, while being heavy on metaphors, at least offers some fascinating details, such as the possibility of having technology to communicate with whales by 2046. The series is at its best when it focuses on human-scale dramas and lets Climate change serve as a backdrop.
The show also portrays a bleak future in which the air has become so polluted that San Franciscans don oxygen tanks to step outside, and most human food is some version of kelp. Despite the show’s dark tone, it has moments of humour and a keen curiosity about human nature that goes beyond hand-wringing monologues about our capacity for greed or complacency.
‘Extrapolations’ is a reminder that our actions have consequences, and that we need to take action on climate change before it’s too late. The show has the potential to raise awareness among viewers, but it is unlikely to be a significant catalyst for change unless people take action in their daily lives. We can all make small changes to reduce our carbon footprint, such as using public transportation or cycling instead of driving, recycling, and conserving energy. These small steps can make a big difference in the fight against Climate change.
