The story of two-year-old Alex Kenney could have been a tragedy. But thanks to quick thinking by his parents, the help of talented hospital staff, and most of all, the intelligence of his pet Pit Bull Layla, Alex is now alive and able to tell his story.
Alex was playing with his dog Layla near a dam in Coff’s Harbour, Australia when he suddenly fell into the water. A few minutes later, Alex’s father was alarmed when Layla came running into their house soaking wet. Her urgency combined with the fact that she was sopping wet immediately tipped him off that his son was in trouble.
Poor Alex was motionless, face down floating in the water. Thank goodness his parents got to him in time and started CPR. Once at the hospital, his parents prepared for the worst – but when Alex woke up, he was none the worse for wear!
If Layla hadn’t come running when she did Alex would definitely have drowned that day. It just goes to show that dogs truly are the best friends to have!
