There Aren’t Many Animal Shelters in Iran – So This Man Made His Own
Animal lovers will stop at nothing to help an animal in need. We recently shared the inspiring story about people who taught a special needs piglet to walk again, and we can’t forget about the Good Samaritans who helped a dog who spent his life on a chain to run free. Seeing these stories gives us hope that there are plenty of people who see animals as valuable and important members of our society.
So when we read the story of Hosein Mohammadi of Iran, who started rescuing animals on his own, we were left in awe of his courage.
In Iran, there are many homeless dogs roaming the streets but not many shelters able to rescue them all. Many of the dogs are euthanized at no fault of their own. Being a big animal lover, he decided to do something.
His first rescue dog, Sezar, provided a revelation for Hosein. “I had heard my calling in life … I had to become a voice for these voiceless abused animals,” Hosein wrote on his website. Ever since Hosein has dedicated his life to helping innocent animals.
Hosein has selflessly helped hundreds of animals, ranging from turtles to dogs, nursing many of them back to health. He has taken in many of the animals himself and for others, he has found them forever homes.
Many noticed Hosein’s dedication and wanted to help. Soon afterward, Sezar Sanctuary was founded. The sanctuary works towards getting stray animals off of the streets and into loving homes.
Sezar’s Sanctuary has been effective in driving change across Iran by getting the word out against cruel forms of animal abuse, such as puppy mills, animal fighting, and dog cruelty.

Organizations rely heavily on volunteers to assist with animal care and day-to-day operations. There’s never a shortage of things to do and opportunities are available for people of every skill set. If your preference is helping out behind the scenes, you can volunteer your services by assisting with fundraisers, outreach events or general office tasks. And please, always adopt and never shop!
