It seems that a day doesn’t go by where some new evidence appears pointing to the connection between our food choices and the impact they have on the environment. It’s no secret that One Green Planet believes that our global food system centered around animal agriculture is at the heart of our environmental crisis. After all, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that livestock production is responsible for 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, while other organizations like the Worldwatch Institute have estimated it could be as much as 51 percent. Not to mention, this industry is driving massive amounts of air and water pollution as well as driving species into extinction. So while all of this information might be enough to definitively convince even the biggest meat-lover to cut back on the steak … this point is made clearly in a graphic from one of the new studies published in this year’s Global Food Policy Report from the International Food Policy Research Institute.

This chart demonstrates something we’ve predicted before: beef has by far the largest climate footprint, not only compared to plants but also the alternative animal-based foods.

Despite the fact that one of the first issue that comes up when discussing plant-based diets, and diets in general, is getting enough protein, research shows we might not need protein as much as we think.  In fact, people that consume animal protein in every meal can end up consuming up to five times more animal protein than their daily requirement. This high-level consumption of meat is wildly unnecessary. As doctors and scientists have stated, the daily recommendation of protein can be easily met by including a variety of grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables.
