We have a lot of misconceptions about cows. These animals are primarily known as commodities, used either to produce meat or dairy for our consumption – because of this, we are taught that their sole purpose and reason for existence is to feed us. It’s this mindset that enables us to subject them to horrific conditions in factory farms.
This video from Animals Australia features the journey of one bull who has just arrived at his slaughter destination after being shipped for weeks on a live-exported from his original home in Australia. What we see here is not a mindless animal who is content to forego his freedom and life to carry on his journey to “serve his purpose.” Instead, we see an intelligent animal, fighting for survival.
Cows are highly intelligent animals who are known to form deep bonds and social connections with their peers. They can learn their names and remember faces – they are also known to hold grudges. They are highly aware of their surroundings and empathize with one another. Knowing this, it comes as little surprise that this bull would want to resist his fate.
While live-export is not practiced everywhere, the experience of this bull is similar to billions of others who are funnelled through the slaughter system every year. We could all stand to open our eyes and not see these animals as mindless beings who are happy to exist for our use, but intelligent, sentient beings.
