A European Survey Revealed Spain’s Changing Appetite

People eat and drink on a street in Spain

A recent pan-European survey conducted under the EU Smart Protein project, titled Changing Appetite, has unveiled insights into Spain’s shifting consumption habits towards plant-based foods. Published by ProVeg, a leading food awareness organization, this comprehensive research offers a closer look at the dynamics of plant-based consumption in Spain, a pivotal market within Europe.

The survey, encompassing 7,500 respondents across ten European countries, including Spain, was a collaborative effort between ProVeg International, the University of Copenhagen, and the University of Ghent. In Spain, a country increasingly recognized for its role in the plant-based sector, the survey illuminates significant trends.

According to the findings, Spain stands as Europe’s fourth-largest market for plant-based foods, with sales reaching €500 million between 2020 and 2022. Moreover, a report by the Universidad Pontificia Comilla’s Department of Business Management, in conjunction with The Vegan Agency, projects substantial growth in veganism, with 75% of vegan companies anticipating favorable expansion over the next two years.

Notably, 48% of meat consumers in Spain report reducing their meat intake over the past year, indicative of a significant dietary shift. Additionally, there’s a notable surge in consumer confidence regarding plant-based products, with 45% expressing increased trust compared to three years ago. Factors contributing to this confidence include product safety, labeling accuracy, and reliability.

Looking ahead, the future of plant-based food in Spain appears promising, driven by informed and environmentally conscious consumers demanding high-quality, nutritionally rich products. Verónica Larco Jiménez, ProVeg Spain’s communication director, said, “It is certainly a growing and evolving sector, where consumers are more informed, environmentally aware, and no longer satisfied with just any product.”
