The grocery store is an easy place to overspend, and you want to be wise with how you are spending your hard-earned money. Many of us follow some kind of grocery budget but whether you need to be on a budget or not, it is still a good idea to walk into a grocery store with a price in mind. If you follow all of these tips, you are guaranteed to stick to your grocery bill budget, no matter how small or large it may be.

Tips to Help You Stick to a Grocery Budget

1. Figure Out Your Budget

Before you ever plan to go to the grocery store, you need to have a set budget in place. Without a set budget, you may overspend without even realizing it. Look at your past grocery trips to calculate how much you spend on average, then consider how much you can comfortably afford to spend on groceries. This process needs to be done thoroughly for you to successfully stick to a budget.

2. Shop Your Kitchen

Before you ever start making a grocery list or planning a grocery trip, you need to have a look through your own kitchen. You may be surprised at how much food you already have that needs to be eaten. Just eating some of the food that you already have can dramatically decrease your grocery bill.

3. Meal Plan

Meal planning is the biggest kept secret when it comes to successfully creating a grocery bill budget. It is the perfect way to guarantee that you will have enough food to last until your next grocery trip. It will also help you to not buy items that you won’t be needing throughout the week. If you religiously overspend on grocery trips, you might need to give meal planning a try!

4. Make Grocery Lists

Making a grocery list should go without saying, but a surprising number of people often skip this vital step. If you have a meal planned then you most certainly need a grocery list too. But even if you don’t meal plan, making a grocery list can be key to not overspending. Without it, you can easily lose track of what you need and how much you are spending.

5. Shop at Cheaper Stores

Another mistake people make is shopping at more expensive grocery stores. We all love Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, but they don’t make a good budget-friendly option. You will want to scout your local grocery stores to find the one that is going to fit your budget the best. Walmart is a popular option since they basically carry everything you would need and have many store-brand items that are cheaper.

6. Pick Cheaper Brands

This tip goes hand in hand with choosing a cheaper grocery store to shop at. Many grocery stores will have a grocery store brand that tends to be on the cheaper side. These items are usually going to be the most affordable, and the good thing is that many of them taste the same and have the same ingredients. There is often no difference between an off-brand item and a high-brand item.

7. Buy in Season Produce

When you are buying a lot of produce on a grocery budget, the best thing to do is to buy what is in season. Follow seasonal produce and meal plan accordingly. This is helpful because food that is in season is going to be cheaper. You will pay more if you want berries in the middle of winter or a pumpkin in summer. Not to mention in-season food tastes much better!

8. Skip the Drinks

Drinks are an item on your grocery list that can have a dramatic effect on your grocery budget. Soda, alcohol, and juice can all quickly add up and send your grocery bill over the edge. It’s best to avoid drinks or cut down on them significantly, especially if you’re on a tight budget.

9. Hold Yourself Accountable

A big part of sticking to a grocery budget isn’t just about following these tips. You can know what to do and still not do it. If you want to stick to a budget, you have to hold yourself accountable. You have to put the responsibility of staying within your budget on your shoulders.

10. Follow Sales

If your grocery store offers sales, keep your eye on them. Just keep in mind that you should only splurge on sales that include items that you regularly use. Otherwise, you will just be spending money without good reason.

11. Buy in Bulk

If you are able to, it is always a good idea to buy food in bulk. This is especially useful for large families that quickly go through food. Some bulk food items that are good to buy are grains, beans, nuts and seeds, sugar, flour, and hearty vegetables.

12. Pick a Few Treats

Even though you are on a budget, that doesn’t mean that you can’t still treat yourself. If you never treat yourself, you will start to lose motivation to work so hard towards your financial goals. Try to pick one small treat every grocery trip. Something small and cheap but still special enough to get you excited!
