In a powerful collaboration, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, drag queen and vocalist Pattie Gonia, and 2019 NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner Quinn Christopherson have created a potential anthem for the climate movement with their song, “Won’t Give Up.” Shot at the Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska, the music video is a poignant tribute to the rapidly melting Exit Glacier, symbolizing the urgent environmental crisis facing our planet.

Originally conceived as a requiem for the glacier, “Won’t Give Up” stands out from other environmental songs by focusing on hope and perseverance in the face of climate change. “We’re not going to give up on nature,” said Christopherson, highlighting the song’s message of resilience and collective action.

The song’s creation was a response to the visible signs of Climate change, like melting glaciers, rising seas, and extreme weather events. These changes are stark reminders of the global impact of fossil fuel consumption. In the song, Ma’s cello solo evokes the weeping glacier, capturing the beauty and fragility of our planet.

What sets “Won’t Give Up” apart is its broad appeal. The song’s lyrics are intentionally vague, allowing it to resonate with various social movements beyond just climate action. According to Gonia, the song can also symbolize struggles for racial justice or queer rights, making it a versatile anthem for different causes.

The song’s release was accompanied by community music workshops, emphasizing the importance of expressing emotions to avoid despair. “The song is so much more than just about the climate crisis,” said workshop organizer Princess Daazhraii Johnson. It’s about human connection and our collective role as stewards of the Earth.

As “Won’t Give Up” gains traction, its creators hope it will inspire action and solidarity, much like anthems of past social movements. Christopherson emphasizes that the song is meant to be sung, screamed, and danced to by everyone. In the face of a climate crisis, “Won’t Give Up” offers a unifying message of hope, urging us to stand together for our planet.
