Experts highlight that rapid shifts in blood sugar might lead to swelling in the optic nerve or damage to the retina, which can cause irreversible vision loss in one or both eyes.
Still, doctors stress there’s no need for panic. Lead author Dr. Bradley Katz from the John A. Moran Eye Center explained that while there is a link, it’s a rare occurrence, and continued monitoring and research will help determine exactly who might be at risk. People with underlying issues like sleep apnea or a predisposition for optic nerve problems should consider regular checkups before and during treatment. The big takeaway: If you notice any sudden changes in eyesight while using these drugs, don’t hesitate to contact your healthcare provider.
