A recent study suggests sparkling water might have a minor role in supporting weight loss by enhancing glucose metabolism. However, experts caution that these effects are minimal and should not be seen as a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, the analysis explores how the carbon dioxide in fizzy water could influence blood glucose levels. Similar to the process observed during hemodialysis, the CO2 from sparkling water is absorbed and converted to bicarbonate in red blood cells. This process can potentially activate enzymes that boost glucose uptake and metabolism.
Despite these findings, the benefits of carbonated water for weight management are modest. The author of the study underscores that sustainable weight loss requires a balanced diet and consistent physical activity. Drinking sparkling water may provide a temporary feeling of fullness, but the exact mechanisms by which it might influence glucose metabolism are still not fully understood.
There are also potential drawbacks to consider. For individuals with sensitive stomachs or conditions like irritable bowel syndrome or acid reflux, fizzy water could exacerbate symptoms such as bloating or gas.
Professor Sumantra Ray, Executive Director of the NNEdPro Global Institute for Food, Nutrition, and Health, commented on the research, saying that while there is a theoretical link between sparkling water and glucose metabolism, more comprehensive human studies are needed to confirm these effects.
Ultimately, moderation is key. While sparkling water may offer some metabolic benefits, it is not a standalone solution for weight loss and should be enjoyed alongside proven strategies like proper nutrition and exercise.
