The demand for weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy continues to grow as more Americans turn to them for managing diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Known as GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), these medications have been celebrated for their effectiveness in promoting weight loss, but they also come with potential risks that warrant attention.
Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs (VA) St. Louis Health Care System conducted an extensive study to better understand the effects of GLP-1RAs on the body. The study, published in Nature Medicine, analyzed health data from over 2 million veterans treated for diabetes. The findings revealed notable benefits, including a reduced risk of cognitive and behavioral health issues, but also highlighted increased risks of gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and kidney problems.
“Given the drugs’ newness and skyrocketing popularity, it is important to systematically examine their effects on all body systems — leaving no stone unturned,” said Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, a lead researcher on the study.
GLP-1 medications were associated with decreased risks of neurocognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as lower incidences of substance addiction, self-harm, and psychotic disorders. Researchers believe these effects stem from the drugs’ ability to act on brain regions tied to impulse control and reward systems. They also reduce inflammation in the brain and promote weight loss, which can further improve neurological health.
While GLP-1 medications offer significant benefits, they are not without drawbacks. The study confirmed previously reported side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Additionally, researchers noted the potential for more severe issues, including pancreatitis and kidney damage. These risks, although rare, highlight the importance of close monitoring by healthcare providers.
Dr. Al-Aly emphasized that although the drugs’ benefits for conditions like dementia are modest, they could provide valuable treatment options where few alternatives exist. However, he cautioned that these medications should be part of a broader care plan that includes lifestyle changes and other treatments.
