If you live near a busy sidewalk, you have seen them. Pigeons weave between shoes, wait for crumbs, and keep going even when people shoo them away. In many US cities, we treat these animals like a nuisance. Yet they are simply trying to survive in the world we built.
According to The Guardian writer and comedian Toussaint Douglass, our relationship with pigeons started thousands of years ago. Humans brought their cliff dwelling ancestors into early settlements and raised them for food. Soon, people noticed their uncanny homing skills. Across empires, pigeons carried messages before phones, radio, and the modern mail truck. In other words, the city pigeon is here because humans shaped it to live near us.
We also forget how much they have done for us in moments that really counted. During the second world war, Britain ran a National Pigeon Service that trained vast numbers of birds. Some completed missions that helped save human lives. That legacy deserves more than jokes and contempt. It is a reminder that the humble city bird is still wildlife, not a disposable prop in the background of our commutes.
So what does respect look like now. Start with kinder design choices, not spikes and nets. Support parks, trees, and clean water that help urban birds thrive. A healthier environment is one where even the scrappy city species have a place. Also, cut litter and food waste, because pigeons clean up what we leave behind. When we practice empathy toward pigeons, we practice public health too, because compassion spreads.
If you want to help, begin by seeing pigeons as fellow residents on this Earth. Then back policies that protect urban nature, and choose plant based meals more often, so a more vegan future feels normal and doable.
