What is Behind the Veterinarian Shortage?

The longstanding shortage of veterinarians in various areas across the US has raised concerns among experts. This shortage has not only affected pet parents and veterinary staff but also poses risks to food safety and public health. The lack of veterinarians can be attributed to the high cost of entry, long working hours, and the emotional stress associated with dealing with life-and-death situations involving animals.

The issue of the veterinarian shortage has been ongoing for over four decades, according to Laura Molgaard, the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota. The increased demand for veterinary services coincided with the rise in pet ownership and the growing expectation of extensive care for animals. However, the number of veterinary schools and the available seats in these schools did not experience a commensurate increase during this time.

The impact of this shortage is felt most severely in rural areas. Veterinary school graduates often have to prioritize higher-paying jobs in cities due to the considerable amount of student debt they accumulate. As a result, pet parents and other animal owners in rural communities struggle to find adequate veterinary care. However, the consequences go beyond the welfare of individual pets. Molgaard emphasizes that veterinarians play a crucial role in safeguarding the health of animal populations and, consequently, public health. They serve as early detectors of animal diseases, including those that can be transmitted to humans. Without a sufficient number of veterinarians in the community, these diseases can go undetected until it is too late.

The veterinary profession faces various challenges that contribute to the shortage. The pressure of the job, comparatively low pay, and high student debt create intense circumstances for veterinarians. Support staff, including veterinary technicians, also face issues such as being underpaid and overworked. Liz Hughston, president of the National Veterinary Professionals Union, highlights the financial struggles that veterinary professionals face. Veterinary technicians, despite completing an educational program and passing the necessary exams, often earn less than a living wage. This situation prompts many technicians to opt for retail or fast-food jobs instead. The financial strain on both veterinarians and technicians is exacerbated when pet parents are faced with expensive treatment options. As pet insurance is not widely utilized in the US, pet parents are sometimes unable to afford the necessary care, leading to difficult decisions and potential blame directed at veterinary professionals.

The mental health of veterinarians is also at risk. Suicide rates among veterinarians, particularly females, are significantly higher compared to the general population, as shown by a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The nature of the profession, including the difficult decisions and interactions with clients regarding financial limitations, contributes to the high-stress levels. Gigi Tsontos, executive director of the veterinarian mental health charity Not One More Vet, explains that the workload and the emotional connection with the situations they face can take a toll on veterinary professionals.

To address the shortage of veterinarians, it is crucial to find solutions that alleviate the financial burden associated with veterinary education and increase Support for veterinary professionals. Improved salaries, reduced student debt, and addressing mental health challenges should be prioritized to attract and retain talent in the field. Additionally, public awareness about the importance of veterinary services and the impact of the shortage on animal welfare, food safety, and public health is necessary to encourage action and Support for the veterinary profession.
