Understanding Your Dog’s Feelings: Signs to Watch Out For

TikTok user @doghealthwithlol recently shared a video that caught the attention of dog caretakers worldwide. The video aimed to shed light on the signs that can help determine if your beloved furry companion truly likes you. While the advice provided in the video may be helpful, it’s essential to remember that reading your dog’s emotions isn’t always as clear-cut as it may seem.

According to Sally Grottini, a professional dog trainer, dogs express fear or discomfort in various ways, including ears back, tail down (or sometimes tucked between the legs), and avoiding eye contact. Additionally, their eyes may show more white, and they may approach cautiously when feeling uneasy.

One common misconception among dog caretakers is that their canine companions’ behavior towards them directly reflects their level of affection. Grottini clarified that dogs don’t function like humans when it comes to emotions. Instead, their actions are often driven by instinct, which revolves around self-preservation. When a dog hides, runs, barks, or growls, they are likely frightened, and their instinctual response is to defend themself or retreat.

However, not all dogs show the same level of affection, and this doesn’t necessarily imply that they dislike their humans. Grottini highlighted that different dogs have different temperaments, some of which may exhibit a more aloof or alpha demeanor. In such cases, the human becomes just another member of the pack, and the dog might not display the same exuberance as they would with an unfamiliar visitor.

If you suspect that your dog is frightened or uneasy around someone it is important to respect their boundaries. Forcing the dog to interact with the person can escalate their fear and potentially lead to unwanted behavior.

To build a strong bond with a less affectionate dog, Grottini offered valuable advice: understanding the dog’s temperament is crucial. If your dog has an inherently fearful disposition, trying to change that aspect of their personality might not be feasible. However, this doesn’t mean that you cannot establish a close relationship with your dog over time.

It’s essential to recognize that each dog is an individual with their own unique personality and preferences. Some dogs may not appreciate people standing over them, reaching out, or walking toward them, and that’s perfectly fine. Understanding and respecting their boundaries will go a long way in fostering trust.
