Colon cancer is showing up more in people under 50, and researchers want answers. According to Joshua Nair, the Western diet is back in the spotlight. In one international study, researchers compared countries using population data through 2017. Rates rose in 27 of 50 countries and territories, with England among the steepest increases.
In the United States, many younger patients are diagnosed later, which can mean tougher treatment. That makes early warning signs worth taking seriously. If colorectal cancer runs in your family, it helps to say so. It is also smart to ask a clinician when screening might make sense.
So what is driving the rise? Many experts point to ultra processed foods. They are cheap and easy, but they crowd out fiber rich meals. That matters because fiber supports a healthier gut and helps digestion stay regular.
This is also an environment story. These foods are designed for constant snacking, not nourishment. They often come with heavy packaging and long supply chains. At the same time, many neighborhoods limit everyday movement. When daily life involves more sitting, risk can climb.
The good news is that personal choices still matter. A more plant based routine can start small. Beans, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are familiar and filling. Over time, this way of eating can Support better health. It also reduces strain on the Earth and lowers harm to animals.
Food is not the only factor. Smoking, alcohol use, and low activity levels also play roles. Symptoms can be subtle, including bowel changes, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue. If they persist, it is important to speak with a clinician.
Small swaps add up. Try one vegan dinner this week and build from there for your body and the planet.
