When Mrs. T the 90-year-old tortoise was hibernating this past winter, she was attacked by a rat who crawled into the slumbering turtle’s hutch. Jude Ryder, Mrs. T’s pet parent, was horrified when she found little the injured turtle and jumped into action to help. Unfortunately, the damage was too extensive to save Mrs. T’s front legs, but with a little creativity, she would scoot again!
Dale Ryder, Jude’s son, is a mechanical engineer and was able to come up with a simple design that would allow Mrs. T to enjoy all the mobility she had before – with an added boost. Fitting Mrs. T with a set of model aircraft wheels, Dale gave this injured tortoise a new lease on life!
“It was like fitting her with a turbo charger – she’s going double the speed she used to,” said Ryder. “Mrs T is still quite young for a tortoise. She could go on for another 50 years – all she needs is a new set of tyres every now and again.”
Mrs. T has full reign over Jude’s garden once again. “We were afraid she may have to be put down, but her new set of wheels have saved her life,” Jude told the Telegraph, “… we can always find her because she leaves very strange tracks behind wherever she goes.”
