A surge in wildlife-themed tattoos is part of a collaborative effort between numerous Danish tattoo artists and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness about endangered species. The campaign, which started last Monday and runs until Friday the 24th, directs profits from these specific tattoos towards WWF’s Conservation projects.
Jacob Fjalland, WWF’s environmental director, underscores the campaign’s significance. “When you wear a tattoo of an endangered animal, you are reminded of the decline of our amazing species every single day. At the same time, the tattoo can help start a conversation with others about the importance of protecting and restoring nature,” he says.
According to the WWF, the rate of global biodiversity loss is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, with over 44,000 animal species threatened by extinction. Major factors contributing to this crisis include coral reef destruction, deforestation in the Amazon, and overfishing.
One species that the WWF is striving to protect is the wild leopard, the creature Helene Spetzler chose for her tattoo done by shop owner Tanya Betty at BettyZoo. “It’s been a long time since my last tattoo, so I’ve just been waiting. Suddenly this campaign launched, and then I thought, now’s the time! Now there’s an extra reason to go through with it,” Spetzler shares.
The campaign has generated significant interest, with Betty’s studio receiving a surge of requests. Some potential clients had to be turned away because their chosen designs didn’t feature endangered animals. Nevertheless, Betty has been busy accommodating the influx of customers and is in continuous talks with many who hope to get their tattoos before the campaign ends.
