Pet lovers in the Washington, D.C. area are being warned about a cruel new scam that preys on the desperation of people searching for their lost animals. According to WTOP’s Dan Ronan, the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) has reported multiple cases of fraudsters posing as vets or employees from animal welfare organizations, claiming they’ve found a missing pet and demanding immediate payment to release them.
The emotional appeal is manipulative and calculated. Scammers often claim the pet was injured and needs emergency medical treatment—prompting victims to send money through apps, gift cards, or wire transfers. But the sad truth? The scammers never had the pet at all.
Tim Moyer, HRA’s chief law enforcement officer, warns, “Do not send money. Instead, contact the organization they claim to represent directly.” HRA’s own guidance reinforces that legitimate groups will never demand payment to return an animal.
The scam is widespread and coordinated. Scammers track public lost pet posts on social media and local forums like Nextdoor and Craigslist. That means even sharing your missing pet poster can put you at risk of being targeted. Kelly Whittier, HRA’s director of public affairs, added that some victims were conned out of hundreds of dollars, all while still missing their pets.
This isn’t the first time criminals have preyed on animal lovers. Similar scams have previously been reported by organizations like the ASPCA. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of how far bad actors will go.
If your pet goes missing, report it to a reputable rescue group or your local animal control. Don’t trust unsolicited calls—verify everything yourself.
Let’s stand up for the voiceless. Share this warning widely, Support trusted shelters, and consider adopting instead of shopping for pets. Choosing compassion protects animals—and the people who love them.
