Oakland port

In an ambitious move to curb environmental Pollution, the Port of Oakland has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative designed to dramatically reduce emissions from docked ships. Developed by the startup STAX, a remarkable barge-like system, likened to a colossal vacuum cleaner, is set to tackle the issue head-on by capturing diesel exhaust from container ships and other large vessels while they are berthed.

Mike Walker, CEO of STAX, explained how this innovative technology operates, emphasizing its efficiency in filtering out 99% of particulate matter and other pollutants from ship emissions. This process significantly minimizes the volume of diesel pollutants, transforming them into a manageable, disposable form. According to Walker, the emissions captured are equivalent to the Pollution generated by thousands of cars daily, highlighting the system’s potential impact on air quality.

This initiative arrives at a critical time, as the California Air Resources Board has introduced stringent regulations requiring oceangoing vessels to reduce their idling emissions by approximately 80%. These measures aim to address the Pollution levels that have long been a concern for communities surrounding the port, particularly West Oakland, shedding light on the far-reaching effects of ship emissions on regional air quality.

In addition to employing emissions capture technology, the Port of Oakland has expanded its use of shore power facilities, enabling ships to maintain electrical power without running their engines. However, compatibility issues between ship and shore power connections pose challenges, underscoring the need for versatile solutions like STAX’s emissions capture system.

Colleen Liang, who leads environmental planning at the port, mentioned that the port is exploring a variety of innovative solutions, including portable shore power systems, to accommodate vessels not equipped for conventional shore power hookups.

The partnership between STAX and the Port of Oakland signifies a significant stride towards a cleaner, more sustainable maritime industry. By harnessing advanced green technologies, the Port of Oakland is setting a precedent for environmental stewardship, aiming to inspire similar initiatives worldwide and chart a course toward a more eco-friendly future for the shipping industry.
