A catchy song from the new LEGO movie chants that “everything is awesome,” but as activist group Greenpeace points out, everything is NOT awesome, including Shell’s destruction of the arctic’s beautiful environment through oil drilling. LEGO has been printing Shell’s logo on their blocks, helping advertise their gasoline to children before they’re even old enough to drive.
Many of us have fond memories of building with LEGOs, and this makes the toy company’s partnership with Shell especially unsettling. Children playing with LEGOs today will associate Shell’s trademark with fun times and will remember the logo when they get older and start buying gasoline. It’s a sneaky marketing strategy, but it works.
In Greenpeace’s harrowing video, LEGO blocks are used to illustrate the beauty of the arctic landscape and its wildlife, and how quickly Shell’s drilling practices can make it turn ugly. Children who view these images definitely won’t see Shell’s product in the positive light they intended! We hope that LEGO and other toy companies will take notice and put the health of our planet above big business interests.
