Normally, when it comes to intervening in wildlife matters, it’s best for us humans to keep our distance. Whether it’s an injured or lost animal, without formal training, there’s no way for us to accurately determine whether an animal is fit to re-enter his or her habitat. However, those who have worked closely with wildlife animals in the past, have the rare privilege of getting to facilitate some pretty magical moments. Sometimes that means fetching an animal who has gotten stuck in some human-made contraption, treating an injury or reuniting lost babies with their families.
After the two-day-old baby sea otter in the video above became separated from his mother, Heather Harris, a veterinarian with the Marine Mammal Center and Mike Harris, a sea otter biologist, were called in to help the little one. After scoping out the area where the mother was swimming around, the team strategically threw the baby otter back into the water. Although at first it’s unclear as to whether the mother realizes that her baby is there, just moments later you see her emerge from the water and quickly grabbing the baby in a loving and protective embrace as she swims away! So precious. Let this serve as a reminder that when humans and animals work together amazing things can be accomplished.
