Deep in the remote mountain streams of Spain, Portugal, and southern France, an almost mythical creature swims through the shadows. The Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is one of Europe’s strangest and rarest mammals — and it’s in serious trouble.

According to BBC Discover Wildlife, this nocturnal insectivore is perfectly adapted for its aquatic lifestyle. It has a soft, waterproof coat, webbed hind feet, and a long, flexible snout that functions almost like a mini trunk. Using it to forage along riverbeds in the dark, the desman searches for tiny prey like insect larvae, worms, and tadpoles.

What makes this odd little animal so fascinating is also what makes it vulnerable. The Pyrenean desman needs clear, fast-flowing rivers and mountain streams to survive. It avoids still or polluted waters, and can only thrive in clean, well-oxygenated habitats. That makes it extremely sensitive to environmental changes like dam construction, water pollution, and climate-driven droughts. Fragmentation of its river habitats has left populations isolated and shrinking.

Despite its elusive nature — often detected only through camera traps or DNA in water samples — conservationists are racing to learn more about this living fossil, which has changed little since prehistoric times. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as Vulnerable, and its decline is an urgent reminder of how fragile freshwater ecosystems can be.

The good news? Clean water protects more than just the desman. Restoring rivers, stopping Pollution, and reducing human impact can safeguard entire ecosystems.

If you care about animals like the Pyrenean desman, consider the impact your choices have on waterways. Avoid fast fashion, reduce plastic use, and choose plant-based foods that put less pressure on natural ecosystems. Every decision helps protect species that can’t speak for themselves.
