Ozzy the dog, who was frightened by fireworks and subsequently hit by a car, has been joyfully reunited with his family, thanks to a microchip. The story, shared by Orange County Animal Services, highlights the critical role microchipping plays in reuniting lost pets with their humans.
Ozzy was discovered early Friday morning, struggling to move after the accident had rendered his hind legs immobile. He was quickly taken to a veterinary emergency clinic for stabilization before being transferred to Orange County Animal Services. There, staff found a microchip implanted in Ozzy.
The presence of the microchip allowed the shelter team to identify Ozzy by name and reach out to his humans. Upon receiving the distressing news, Ozzy’s family hurried to the shelter to be reunited with their beloved pet.
Orange County Animal Services emphasized the importance of microchipping pets, encouraging pet parents to consult their veterinarians about the procedure. The shelter pointed out that pets with microchips have a significantly higher chance of being returned to their families, with studies showing a return rate of 52.2% for microchipped pets, compared to 21.9% for those without.
Ozzy’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the peace of mind and protection that microchipping can provide. More importantly, it also touches on why fireworks should not be used.
