Two tiny kittens are fighting for their lives after a shocking act of cruelty in California. According to People, four newborn kittens were discovered zip-tied together underneath a shopping cart in a parking lot in Rancho Santa Fe. The kittens were found by a worker at the shopping center and rushed to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, a no-kill shelter in the area.

The kittens were less than five days old, still had their umbilical cords, and were covered in fleas. Tragically, two of the kittens didn’t survive. The two remaining survivors, now named Frodo and Sam, are receiving around-the-clock care. One of them suffered a serious leg injury from the zip tie, while the other appeared mostly unharmed.

Despite their condition, both kittens showed a strong will to live and immediately began bottle feeding, which staff at the shelter described as a critical first step. “That was our biggest concern at first,” said Kendall Schulz, the shelter’s adoptions director. “We were worried they hadn’t eaten in hours and wouldn’t eat.”

Now in the care of experienced foster volunteers, the kittens need feeding every two hours as they continue their recovery journey. The shelter, which operates solely on private donations, has praised its community of fosters who step up in moments like this.

This heart-wrenching story is a stark reminder of how vulnerable animals are to human cruelty. Supporting shelters like Helen Woodward, choosing adoption over buying pets, and spreading awareness about animal abuse are essential steps we can all take. If you’re moved by Frodo and Sam’s story, consider fostering, donating, or adopting — because every animal deserves a life of love, not suffering.
