At just four days old and weighing only five ounces, still blind newborn kitten Mercury was already fighting to survive.

Mercury was found outdoors in September 2013 with his two front legs severed and toes cut off on one of his back legs.

It’s believed that a weed whacker caused the injuries as neighborhood residents had been doing yard work “shortly before he was found,” as his guardians report on Facebook.

Mercury was rushed to a local veterinary office, where his wounds were cleaned and his current guardians were called in to care for him during his recovery as they were known in the community for taking care of rescues and special needs kittens.

According to his guardians, Mercury’s right arm “goes down to just before the elbow, his left goes to after the elbow, but before the paw, and his left back foot only has one toe.”

Despite these physical disabilities and his limited range of movement, Mercury refuses to give up and is determined to be an independent cat.

“He plays with toys, he jumps, plays with other cats and dogs, sleeps on the bed, uses a litter box, and believes he is the king of the world and should be worshiped,” his guardians write.

While Mercury has recovered from his injuries and is growing up so far without any abnormalities, he is not a candidate for prosthetic legs since he does not have at least 40 percent of his front limbs intact nor working joints.

However, his guardians are looking in to getting him some wheels to make moving around a bit easier, but they must wait until he stops growing in order for him to be fully assessed.

In the mean time, Mercury is doing exceeding well, playing, jumping, and running like the independent kitten he is. He has overcome adversity beautifully and is showing the world that even when you think something seems impossible, you can succeed despite the odds. What a cat!
