As scorching temperatures and prolonged heatwaves continue to blanket Texas, communities are grappling with the adverse effects of the record-breaking weather. The relentless heat is not only challenging for the residents, but it’s taking a toll on the local wildlife as well. Among the unsung heroes emerging from these tough times is Sasha Bulkley, a compassionate resident of Cedar Park, who took it upon herself to rescue turtles struggling to survive amidst the sweltering conditions.

Sasha Bulkley’s journey to becoming a turtle savior began when she embarked on a bike ride through her Cedar Park neighborhood, situated about 16 miles northwest of Austin. Witnessing a couple of turtles attempting to navigate across a sun-soaked road, she immediately recognized the peril they were in and sprang into action. Bulkley’s empathy and quick thinking led her to call her husband for assistance, and together, they devised a plan to rescue the stranded reptiles.
Sasha Bulkley’s first encounter with the vulnerable turtles compelled her to relocate them to safety. Using her SUV, she transported the turtles to Brushy Creek Lake Park, a haven about a mile and a half away from her neighborhood. However, her efforts didn’t stop there. The following day, as she headed to her pilates class, Bulkley noticed more turtles struggling on the road, setting the stage for her ongoing mission to save as many lives as possible. She managed to save an impressive total of 33 turtles during the pivotal days when the pond was drying out.
“I hate seeing animals suffer, and I especially hate seeing them run over,” Bulkley revealed to USA Today, underlining the compassion that fueled her actions. Her love for animals motivated her to take extra steps, such as leaving containers of water in her yard to help them stay hydrated. Her dedication to the welfare of these creatures embodies a wider sentiment of empathy and responsibility toward the environment and its inhabitants and should be an example for us all.
