Kyiv, Ukraine June 29 2023. Greta Thunberg, environmental activist and member of the International Working Group on the Environmental Consequences of War attends a press conference.

A yacht carrying humanitarian supplies and international activists—including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg—was intercepted by Israeli forces before reaching Gaza. According to BBC News, the vessel, named the Madleen, had departed from Catania, Italy, on June 1 as part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s mission to defy Israel’s blockade and raise awareness about Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

Israeli officials dubbed it a “selfie yacht,” claiming it carried “less than a single truckload of aid.” Passengers, including a French lawmaker and activists from Brazil, Turkey, Spain, and the UK, are being medically examined and will be deported. Footage released by the Freedom Flotilla shows the moment the yacht was intercepted near Egypt in the early morning hours of June 9.

Greta Thunberg, in a pre-recorded message, said the group was “kidnapped” by Israeli forces. Meanwhile, Adalah, a legal centre for Arab minority rights in Israel, argued the seizure occurred in international waters and pledged legal action.

Despite dismissive Israeli rhetoric, the activists’ symbolic voyage drew global attention. The Palestinian foreign ministry called for their safety to be ensured, and the UN urged more coordinated humanitarian missions. Amnesty International criticized Israel’s actions as showing “chilling contempt” for international law.

Though the Madleen only carried basic supplies like rice and baby formula, its journey highlighted the severe restrictions placed on aid entering Gaza. Current distribution systems, such as the controversial GHF, have been widely condemned for being chaotic and unsafe, often forcing civilians into deadly situations just to access food.

It’s not about selfies—it’s about survival. True change starts when we refuse to look away. Support grassroots aid efforts and demand an end to blockades that starve the innocent. Compassion can’t be deported.
