Three major wildfires have gripped the nation, with one of the largest in Europe wreaking havoc in the north-eastern regions of Evros and Alexandroupolis for nine continuous days. Sadly, this inferno is believed to have resulted in 20 of the 21 deaths reported in Greece due to wildfires over the past week.
The EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service highlighted that this singular blaze has burned through an astounding 190,000 acres of land, showcasing 120 active hotspots. For context, Copernicus is a crucial component of the EU’s space program, utilizing satellite imagery to offer essential mapping data.
In a heartfelt gesture, Pope Francis conveyed his prayers for the victims of these wildfires during his address at the Vatican, showing solidarity with the Greek populace during these testing times.
The capital of Greece, Athens, hasn’t been spared either. The outskirts of the city have been under siege from a significant fire, which has encroached upon Mount Parnitha’s national park. Another fire, ignited presumably by lightning, blazed across the island of Andros.
Fire outbreaks have become a concerning daily event in Greece, especially as strong winds and the relentless summer heat seem to amplify the flames. In just a single day, firefighters tackled an alarming 122 blazes.
Countries from across Europe have come forward to aid Greece in these desperate times. Among them, Germany, Sweden, Croatia, and Cyprus have dispatched aircraft, while ground Support has been provided by countries such as Romania, France, Bulgaria, and Serbia.
The unfortunate escalation in the frequency and intensity of wildfires in southern European countries is primarily attributed to Climate change. EU officials have highlighted that 2022 stands as one of the most devastating years, second only to 2017 in terms of wildfire damage.
While some of the fires’ causes remain undetermined, authorities suspect a combination of negligence and intentional arson. Several arrests have been made, further emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the necessity for stricter regulations.
In these dire circumstances, the unity and cooperation of nations stand testament to the collective spirit of Europe, even as they confront the harsh realities of our changing climate.
