The Biden administration has announced that nearly $1 billion from the Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act will be allocated towards climate-friendly upgrades for federal buildings. This marks a significant stride in the government’s efforts to combat Climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The General Services Administration (GSA) will distribute $975 million for electrification or energy efficiency upgrades, targeting about 20 percent of the buildings in its portfolio. The result? Twenty-eight of these structures will become carbon neutral, and 100 more will become fully electric.
These sustainability improvements are expected to make a substantial difference. Over the course of the upgraded equipment’s lifetime, it is anticipated to prevent the emission of 2.3 million metric tons of greenhouse gases. That’s the equivalent of what about 290,000 American homes emit in a year.
These efforts also incorporate private funding, and they’re part of a broader initiative by the Biden administration to cut planet-warming emissions both from federal buildings and from the nation as a whole. The goal? Achieving carbon neutrality for federal buildings by 2045.
John Podesta, senior advisor to the president for clean energy innovation and implementation, said in a statement, “Today’s historic announcement shows how the federal government can catalyze climate action by setting a leading example.”
One of the recipients of these upgrades is the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C., which is under the GSA’s control. This building will receive $13.5 million for retrofitting, including the installation of heat pumps and 57,000 LED light bulbs, effectively slashing its energy use by 40 percent.
This announcement marks a substantial step in the right direction, showing how commitment, action, and leadership can advance our fight against Climate change.
