Elderly Woman Dies in Los Angeles Fire After Refusing to Leave Pets Behind

The devastating fires in Los Angeles claimed the life of Annette Rossilli, an 85-year-old Pacific Palisades resident known for her deep love for her pets. Despite warnings and pleas from her caregiver and neighbors, Rossilli chose to remain at home with her beloved animals.

Rossilli’s household included a dog named Greetly, a canary called Pepper, two parrots, and a turtle. According to Fay Vahdani, owner of the home healthcare agency that provided Rossilli with regular care, the pets could have been evacuated with her. However, Rossilli insisted on staying behind. “The problem is you can never force anyone to do anything. It was her choice,” Vahdani told The Los Angeles Times.

The retired business owner, who once ran a plumbing company alongside her late husband, was remembered fondly by Vahdani as “a sweet little lady, very pleasant, full of life.” Vahdani, who last saw Rossilli in December when delivering holiday cookies, noted that while Rossilli had mobility challenges, she was determined and resourceful.

Firefighters discovered Rossilli’s body in her car on Wednesday, January 8. It appears she had attempted to escape but was unable to leave the scene.
