A Sierra Madre couple, Bob and Sara Nesler, have found themselves with an unexpected houseguest, a large black bear. The bear, whom they’ve nicknamed “Junior,” settled underneath their home about two weeks ago after entering through a hole in their porch. Bob, who once worked as a Hollywood animator and drew characters like Yogi Bear, has found humor in the situation, saying, “That’s his den right now.” Despite the odd circumstances, the Neslers feel it’s important to get Junior to leave for safety reasons, even though he hasn’t been a threat. Bob said, “They’re not dangerous creatures at all, unless you’re a trash can.”
Junior, estimated to weigh between 300 and 400 pounds, has made the Neslers’ home his base. He leaves every night to roam, only to return early in the morning. The couple has been amused by his behavior, but they know they need to help him find a new spot to avoid any potential issues. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife visited the home to assist the Neslers. Their recommendation? Let Junior leave naturally and then close off the space. They’ve even installed motion-activated sprinklers to deter his return.
Though Junior hasn’t caused much trouble, Sara Nesler notes, “[He’s] a good tenant…Other than making little piles outside, he really isn’t causing a problem, but for safety, we need to get him out.” The couple hopes Junior will soon find a new place to call home.
