Singer and screen legend Doris Day is celebrating her 90th birthday this April with a series of fundraising events to benefit animals.

The actress has a long history with Animal rights activism, and started her own nonprofit, the Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF), in 1978. Over the years, the Foundation has found forever homes for hundreds of homeless pets, and Day would personally knock on her Beverly Hills neighbors’ doors to check on newly adopted animals to make sure they were being cared for.

In 1987, she founded a lobbying organization called the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL), which focuses on helping animals through legislation, education, and programs. Day and the DDAL formed U.S. Spay Day (now World Spay Day) in 1995 to increase awareness about saving pets’ lives through spaying and neutering.

Though the star was born on April 3, her birthday celebration will be held on April 4 at the Quail Lodge in Carmel, Calif., and will include a doggie fashion show, a tribute dinner with gourmet food and wine, and an adoption event. Guests and online bidders can participate in a benefit auction of unique items, including signed artwork and garments from Day’s personal wardrobe. Participants have until April 1 to place their highest bids, and all proceeds go to the DDAF.
