Data Center Water Use Is Set to Surge With AI

In 2020, Microsoft said it wanted to become water positive by 2030. The promise sounded simple: use less water, fix leaks, and invest in restoration. Then the AI boom hit, and data centers multiplied.

According to The New York Times, Microsoft internally projected that water use across its data center footprint could climb fast this decade, including in places facing shortages. The company later said it updated its forecast and now expects about 18 billion liters of water use in 2030, up about 150 percent from 2020.

That growth matters because water is local. A billion liters pulled from a stressed basin can change daily life. It can also ripple through the ecosystem, from tighter city supplies to drier wetlands that wildlife rely on. In the U.S., the pressure shows up in drought prone regions like metro Phoenix, where cooling hot servers competes with homes, farms, and public needs.

Tech leaders often frame AI as weightless software. But the machines have bodies, and those bodies run hot. So they need cooling, and cooling often means water. Researchers estimate that direct water use at U.S. data centers could reach roughly 150 to 275 billion liters a year by 2028 if growth stays on track.

Transparency is still the missing piece. Without clear, facility level reporting, communities cannot judge tradeoffs or plan for resilience. Meanwhile, water stress can turn into a quiet health problem, especially for low income neighborhoods with aging pipes.

This is not just a tech story. It is an Earth story about who gets water first, and what we protect when supplies run thin. We can demand smarter cooling, honest reporting, and siting that respects people, animals, and pets. We can also eat more plant based meals and try vegan options, since food choices shape water demand too. Let’s back solutions that keep our planet livable.
