A Dachshund named Crusoe was diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease and required two surgeries. The 13 year old dog also needed to complete hydrotherapy sessions. These sessions were to strengthen his back legs, which he had lost use of prior to the surgeries. However, the sessions only took place once a month, slowing down Crusoe’s progress. To help the Dachshund recover faster, his human built him a DIY water treadmill that he could use at home.

In a TikTok video posted to @crusoe_dachshund, Crusoe can be seen using the at home water treadmill. After only a week of workouts, the Dachshund’s human said that there was a noticeable improvement. A caption accompanying the video reads “If your dog ever goes through #IVDD or back surgery – build this! It’s one of the best rehab tools for building strength and stimulating nerves.”
Indeed, hydrotherapy can be a powerful tool in a dog’s recovery after surgery. The buoyancy and resistance from the water can help strengthen muscles while cushioning joints. TikTok viewers loved seeing Crusoe’s DIY water treadmill. The video of the Dachshund exercising has received over 25,000 likes on TikTok.
