Some of these chimpanzees might look like they are dancing with their reflections, but in reality, they are trying to get rid of the strange monkey in the mirror (that they don’t realize is actually a mirror, of course).
Chimpanzees are profoundly territorial animals. They’ve been known to resort to acts of violence in their standoffs against other chimps not from their family or against other species entirely. That’s what they think they are doing when they see a reflection of themselves in the mirror, and proceed to engage in aggressive behaviors to ward off the foreign monkey.
Although no one in the video is in any danger of being harmed by an overly aggressive chimp, it certainly is amusing to see these highly intelligent beings mistaking their own reflections for another animal entirely. But hey, we’re sure if someone explained what a mirror was to them, they’d make peace with the handsome devils staring back at them.
