Baby rhino Gertjie is getting ready for nap time, and he’s trying so hard to stay awake. Watch as he nods off, snuggled close to a staff member at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC).
It wasn’t always like this for Gertjie. He had a home, in the wild, alongside his mother. Unfortunately, poachers got to her before rangers could. And thus, Gertjie became orphaned.
He was rescued by HESC members and recovered from his frightful ordeal soon after. Gertjie is becoming more confident and courageous as he learns that the staff and volunteers at HESC are there to help him.
No matter what horrible circumstances this little rhino had to endure, he is now free from such horrors. He will only know nurture and love while he’s at the center. What’s more? He gets to go on two daily walks, take mud baths, and most importantly, have nap time!
