This video depicts the heroic rescue of baby elephant Ambo. This little one was left orphaned after he accidentally got stuck in the mud and separated from his family. Luckily, the four-month-old was discovered by a community member and reported to Big Life Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting the Amboseli-Tsavo-Kilimanjaro ecosystem of East Africa.
Ambo now resides at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT)‘s elephant orphanage in Kenya where he is learning how to be a proper elephant. He might look small, but he was recently promoted to the middle-aged orphan herd and is apparently becoming more comfortable around older elephants.
DSWT launched it’s Orphan’s Project in order to provide a sanctuary for elephants such as Ambo. Though Ambo was abandoned because he was stuck in the mud, many elephants are left parentless due to human activities such as poaching. It is estimated that approximately as many as 35,000 elephants a year are being killed, which composes about ten percent of Africa’s elephant population on an annual basis.
You can also help the elephant population by donating to DSWT; the organization also promotes ways for you to assist them directly.
