Amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the world’s attention has been primarily focused on the human toll of this conflict. However, some unsung heroes are working tirelessly to save the lives of the innocent and voiceless victims caught in the crossfire. Dr. Lachlan Campbell, a compassionate Australian veterinarian, is one such hero. He has selflessly dedicated himself to rescuing abandoned and wounded animals on the frontlines of this war-torn nation.
Dr. Campbell’s journey into this perilous mission began when he joined the UK-based animal welfare charity, Nowzad, in October. It’s not his first time volunteering in Ukraine, as he previously ventured into the war-torn nation to lend a helping hand. In his homeland, Australia, the 43-year-old vet works in Bundall on the Gold Coast, providing free veterinary care to the pets of homeless people. His commitment to animal welfare knows no boundaries.
The courageous vet has already saved hundreds of terrified and injured animals in Ukraine, including dogs, cats, goats, and even deer. He works tirelessly despite the constant sound of air raid sirens, which punctuate the daily backdrop of the war zone. Many of these animals are found without any sign of their owners, leaving their fate uncertain. Dr. Campbell’s work encompasses performing life-saving emergency surgeries, delivering rabies vaccinations, and administering crucial treatments such as deworming and flea prevention.
One of his most recent initiatives, in collaboration with Nowzad, was the construction of a shelter for 80 dogs in Kramatorsk, an eastern Ukrainian town that has been subjected to multiple shelling incidents since the start of the invasion in February 2022. Dr. Campbell posted shocking footage of a unit block in Kramatorsk, which was struck by a Russian missile, highlighting the grim reality faced by civilians and their pets.
Despite the tremendous challenges and the displacement of residents from Kramatorsk, Dr. Campbell and the Nowzad team remain resolute in their commitment to saving animals near the frontlines. In a poignant video, Nowzad’s founder, Pen Farthing, and a local animal shelter operator named Natalia, spoke to a cat owner who, despite being just 2 kilometers away from the fighting, refused to leave her home.
Pen Farthing is a polarizing figure in the UK, celebrated by animal lovers for his daring animal rescue missions. His controversial evacuation of 173 cats and dogs from Afghanistan in 2021 drew both admiration and criticism. In the case of Ukraine, however, his efforts, alongside Dr. Campbell, have united people worldwide in their shared determination to save innocent lives.
Dr. Campbell’s firsthand experiences have revealed the harrowing consequences of war on animals. Many of the dogs he has saved in Ukraine bear the scars of trauma, including blindness, loss of limbs, and severe anxiety akin to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Campbell is resolute in his mission and declared on a fundraising page, “I will never forget the suffering of innocent animals and people in Ukraine who endure unspeakable cruelty, abandonment, hunger, thirst, explosive mines, and rocket attacks.”
Dr. Campbell relies on the generosity of donors through his GoFundMe page, with funds used for purchasing medication, instruments, equipment, food, blankets, pain relief, and other essential supplies required to address the welfare needs of animals affected by the war in Ukraine.
