Jason Momoa, the actor who plays Aquaman, had ambitious plans for the sequel, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” He co-wrote a 50-page treatment focusing on the Climate change crisis, envisioning Aquaman as an environmental activist. However, Warner Bros had different ideas for the upcoming DC film.
In his original plan, Momoa shared with Variety that the story would feature Aquaman speaking to the United Nations about the melting ice caps. Instead of facing a distant galaxy or alien invaders, Aquaman would confront the devastating impacts of human-caused climate change. Momoa believed this approach would resonate with today’s culture and highlight the urgent need to save our planet.
Unfortunately, Warner Bros chose not to follow Momoa’s treatment completely. While they did purchase his story, it was ultimately shelved during production. This decision conflicted with Momoa, his character’s portrayal, and the studio’s priorities. Nevertheless, he remains proud of the heart and soul he brought to the character.
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” set to release on December 25, might be the last time fans see Momoa as the King of the Sea. With the future of DC now in the hands of James Gunn and Peter Safran, Momoa’s role in the franchise remains to be determined. However, the actor remains optimistic about Aquaman’s involvement in the DC universe.
As fans of Aquaman and sustainability, we can appreciate Momoa’s vision for the sequel. Although his Climate change-focused story may have yet to make it to the big screen, it’s a reminder of the power of storytelling in raising awareness about critical environmental issues.
