Imagine stepping outside in New York City and knowing instantly the cleanest air route to your destination, especially on days when the air quality is less than ideal. That’s now a reality with Airways, the new map-based app launched at the onset of Climate Week NYC.
As metropolitan cities like New York experience declining air quality due to factors like increasing Pollution and climate change impacts, solutions that prioritize residents’ health are more crucial than ever. Research highlights a grim statistic: air pollution was the cause of nearly 7 million deaths worldwide in 2019. It’s no wonder that daily exposure can lead to symptoms like nasal congestion, headaches, or skin irritation, especially for those already vulnerable due to age, pregnancy, or pre-existing health conditions.
But with Airways, users can combat these challenges. How does it work? By blending real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) data and pollen levels, the app pinpoints the cleanest air route for walkers or bikers, directing them through less polluted paths. This innovative tool integrates easily with popular platforms like Google Maps and Apple Maps, ensuring a user-friendly experience. As Dr. Purvi Parikh, an allergist and immunologist at NYU Langone Health, aptly puts it, “They can prioritize their health by choosing those routes with cleaner air.”
What’s more, the intuitive app provides added layers of information, emphasizing intersections of air Pollution and pollen across the city’s many routes. While it’s currently making waves in the Big Apple, Jaideep Singh from Ambee – the environmental intelligence agency behind the app, in collaboration with the allergy medicine company, Allegra – has revealed plans to expand this game-changing technology to other US cities in 2024.
The driving belief behind Airways is simple: empowering people to prioritize their health. So, New Yorkers and soon, many more across the nation, can take a fresh breath of relief as they navigate their cities.
