For the first time in recorded history, the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for central Alaska, including Fairbanks. Temperatures are expected to soar as high as 86°F — an unusual and alarming forecast for a region better known for snow and subzero cold.

According to The Washington Post’s Ian Livingston, the alert comes as part of a new policy by local Weather Service offices to issue formal heat advisories, replacing the more general “special weather statements” previously used. In Fairbanks, temperatures must hit 85°F to trigger an official alert — a threshold now met as the city braces for a string of unseasonably warm days.

Forecasts project highs of 82°F on Friday, 84°F Saturday, 86°F Sunday, and 85°F Monday. If this pattern holds, Fairbanks could break into the top 20 years for the most days above 85°F — and it’s only June.

Though these temps fall short of Fairbanks’ record high of 96°F (set in 1969), the bigger picture is concerning. Alaska is warming two to three times faster than the global average, largely due to human-caused Climate change. While mid-80s in Fairbanks have occurred two or three times per year historically, the increasing frequency and duration signal a climate shifting in real time.

This year’s heat follows a chilly May and early June, showing just how rapidly patterns can swing. If the high-pressure system lingers, more record-breaking warmth could be ahead.

The takeaway? Even Alaska, long seen as a frozen frontier, is not immune to rising temperatures.

It’s time to act. Whether it’s eating more plant-based meals, ditching fossil fuels, or fighting for climate policy, let this be your reminder: the Earth is heating up — even in places you least expect.
