America’s wild horses are iconic symbols of the nation and represent the freedom of the Wild West. Our country’s natural lands were once teeming with herds of these magnificent horses, but for decades the government has been in a war against these innocent creatures to clear land for cattle ranching.

New legislation is being brought forth in Congress today, July 18th, that will put 90,000 horses at risk of being slaughtered. According to a petition on Care2 written by the Humane Society of the United States, the Bureau of Land Management has requested the authority to slaughter America’s horses and burros, both in the wild and in government holding facilities, where over half of their population are currently being kept against their will.

Additionally, according to a petition written by the ASPCA, for the first time in years, Congress could possibly stop USDA horse slaughterhouse inspections, which would lead to both domestic and foreign slaughterers targeting our beloved horses.

If you are outraged by what is happening to our country’s horses and burros, please take a moment to sign this petition written by the Humane Society of the United States that is addressed to the U.S. Congress, and let them know the American people will not stand for this horrific mass slaughter.

To take further action for horses, please sign this petition written by the ASPCA to make a pledge against the capture and slaughter of America’s wild horses and burros.

Many people are completely unaware of this senseless slaughter of horses and burros, so PLEASE share this with your network to spread awareness and Support for these glorious animals.

Killing America’s horses is not only cruel, it is also killing a symbol of freedom our nation was built upon.

  1. U.S. Congress:
Thanks to this WORLDWIDE PETITION, the whole world knows that The Bureau of Land Management has requested the authority to SLAUGHTER WILD HORSES and BURROS currently being held by the government in holding facilities throughout the United States, as well as horses on the range.
This is what one of the Bureau of Land Management\’s webpages says:
"The Bureau of Land Management manages and PROTECTS our nation’s WILD HORSES and BURROS on 26.9 million acres of public lands across 10 western states authorized in the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
The GOAL of the Wild Horse and Burro Program is to ENSURE HEALTHY y wild horses and burros on thriving public rangelands, using all management tools available to us UNDER THE 1971 WILD-FREE-ROAMING HORSES AND BURROS ACT." IS THIS ALL A LIE?????????????
U.S. CONGRESS decision makers – YOU HAVE THE PLATFORM TO STOP THIS SLAUGHTERING OF AMERICA\’S WILD HORSES. Please do it.

  2. Does One Green Planet have no editorial board? It has taken on the appearance of a misguided animal rights organization rather than an effort to protect our natural systems. There is no question that horses are damaging our Western landscape and threaten the existence of many wildlife species. They consume huge amounts of forage and water in an arid environment, often driving other large mammals from the water sources they require; they spread invasive plants such as cheat grass and thistle which fuel catastrophic wildfire, and they cut the ground with sharp hooves resulting in erosion that threaten natives species from invertebrates to amphibians. One might expect that OGP would share an interest in the fate of these other creatures, yet they appear not to question the opinion pieces of the advocates who publish on the site and who have no apparent regard for anything other than horses. Please, take off the blinders and dig a little deeper!

    1. Cattle far outnumber the horses and do far more damage to the environment. I suspect cattle grazing public lands are behind this attempt to remove the horses.

    2. Yes, Sandy, there is no doubt that cattle are more numerous and do more damage. But this cannot excuse the additional damage resulting from horses. Just as we have worked for decades to reduce cattle grazing on public lands, we should also work to reduce the damage done by horses. Of course cattlemen would be pleased to see fewer horses, but so would those who care about wildlife; and a reduction in the number of horses does not prohibit further reductions in cattle as well.
