New York is the newest state to make a MeatOut Day. MeatOut Day happens every year on March 20th and encourages people to try a plant-based diet.
MeatOut Day first started in 1985 and aims to bring awareness to the many benefits of a plant-based diet. This day is thanks to Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM), a nonprofit organization devoted to ending the use of animals for food. They educate people on the environmental benefits of the diet and the truths of the livestock industry.
New York Mayor Eric Adams proclaimed for MeatOut day to be on March 20th throughout all of New York City. There will be an event at P.S. Kitchen in New York City, and other MeatOut events are planned throughout the city.
The city joins Houston and Dallas, Texas, Charlotte and Durham, North Carolina, Columbus, Georgia, Louisville, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Madison, Wisconsin in the participation of MeatOut Day.
New York City is amongst the top vegan-friendly cities globally and has endless vegan and plant-based options. Their vegan restaurants constantly rank among the best in the country and are home to many Black-owned plant-based restaurants.
Mayor Adams, dubbed the ‘vegan mayor,’ has preached the benefits of plant-based diets and talked about his own plant-based health journey in his book, Healthy At Last.
“As a New Yorker myself, I am particularly proud of this proclamation,” said Eric C Lindstrom, Executive Director of FARM. “The advances Mayor Adams has made toward a plant-based future, and Vegan Fridays in New York City schools align perfectly with our mission and the mission of MeatOut.”
After almost 40 years, MeatOut has reached a broad audience all over the world and spreads the knowledge of the diet through educational events and plant-based food samplings.
As people realize the truth about the livestock industry, the negative impact on the environment, and impacts on health, the diet is becoming increasingly popular. There are more meat alternatives than there ever have been, and they are more affordable and widely accessible.
According to FARM, animal protection advocates and consumers in all 50 states and 24 other countries will participate on March 20th and will hold educational events promoting plant-based health.
Proclamations have been made by hundreds of mayors in the past, and this is a massive moment for NYC.
