The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced nearly $3 billion in conditional loan guarantees to propel two major sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) projects. This funding marks a critical step towards achieving the nation’s ambitious environmental and energy goals.

The first loan guarantee, amounting to approximately $1.44 billion, will assist Calumet’s expansion of its Montana facility. The site is set to refine vegetable oils, fats, and greases into high-demand products like SAF, renewable diesel, and renewable naphtha. Once operational, the facility is expected to churn out about 315 million gallons per year of biofuels, primarily SAF. This output will account for 10% of the SAF Grand Challenge, which targets producing 3 billion gallons annually by 2030 as part of a broader effort to supply all U.S. aviation fuel needs with SAF by 2050.
The second guarantee, totaling up to $1.46 billion, has been allocated to Gevo for a pioneering project in Lake Preston, South Dakota. This initiative will focus on converting corn starch directly into jet fuel, incorporating carbon capture and renewable energy solutions. Gevo’s facility aims to be the first of its kind in the U.S., integrating commercial-scale production that supports the transition towards lower-carbon aviation fuels.
These investments are part of the DOE’s broader strategy to enhance domestic biofuel production, which the U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts will surge by 50% in 2024. The rise is mainly driven by increased SAF production, aligning with the growing emphasis on renewable energy sources across the transportation sector.
As the U.S. government pushes forward with its green agenda, these projects not only underline the country’s commitment to sustainable energy but also position America as a leader in the global effort to reduce aviation emissions. The move is expected to catalyze further innovations and investments in the renewable energy sector, setting a sustainable path forward for generations to come.
