OkCupid Finds Climate Change to Be Biggest “Dealbreaker” for Dating App Users

OkCupid found that varying opinions on climate change are the biggest “dealbreakers” to their users trying to find love through the app.

The popular dating app has been around since 2004 and makes 91 million connections annually and 50,000 dates every week. The company is the only dating site that uses thousands of questions for its matching algorithm, and a recent survey found that climate change is a touchy subject on the platform.

They surveyed 250,000 users worldwide over the last year and found that a whopping 90 percent of daters said their match must care about Climate change.

Over the last three years, the company also surveyed 6 million users, 81 percent of which said they were concerned about Climate change. Other notable dealbreakers included subjects like gender equality and gun control.

Jane Reynolds, director of product marketing at OkCupid, told The Hill, “We have just seen over time, Climate change being more and more this huge topic for our millennials daters especially. People feel that with Climate change, it says so much more about you — if that’s something that you believe in and are concerned about.”

The app also asked 250,000 users, “Is it important that your match cares about the environment?” to which 90 percent agreed, with women being seven percent more likely to care.

OkCupid reported that there weren’t any significant differences in answers amongst age groups and locations across the U.S. In major cities, the company reported that 94 percent of San Francisco daters cited this as a dealbreaker, 90 percent in New York, 90 percent in San Diego, 89 percent in Los Angeles, 88 percent in Washington, D.C., and 85 percent in Miami.

When asked, “Are you concerned about Climate change?”, 81 percent of users had concerns about Climate change, with women again being more likely.

Reynolds pointed out that OkCupid is a progressive app and typically draws in users that are very open-minded and express concern in topics like climate change.

Throughout the data research, they also found that there has been a 400 percent increase that climate-conscious users also identify as feminists. Profiles that express concern about Climate change are also much more likely to receive a “like” from other users. Only 7 percent of OkCupid daters answered that they “rarely” or “never” recycle.

This data is impressive and gives hope that people care about the planet’s wellbeing. Sign this petition to demand Australia’s government take action to slow Climate change and protect koalas!
