The League of American Bicyclists has honored 42 colleges and universities across the United States with its latest Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) awards, highlighting their commitment to enhancing biking infrastructure and fostering a culture of active transportation on campus. This recognition brings the total number of bicycle-friendly institutions to 209, with three additional schools receiving honorable mentions.

Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists, emphasized the significance of these initiatives. “When universities make biking easier, safer, and more accessible, they’re not just helping students get from point A to point B—they’re leading the charge in creating a more sustainable future,” Nesper stated. The BFU program supports over four million students nationwide, encouraging healthier lifestyles and reducing environmental impact.

Among the new awardees, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities renewed its platinum-level designation, while eleven other campuses maintained their gold-level status. The University of Oregon also renewed its gold-level recognition, praised for its comprehensive environmental policy aimed at reducing single-occupancy vehicle commutes by one-third by 2030. Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, received a silver award for its first-time application, showcasing initiatives like a bicycle share program, active student groups, and a dedicated bicycle advisory committee.

The BFU awards, categorized into diamond, platinum, gold, silver, bronze, and honorable mentions, are part of the broader Bicycle Friendly America program. These awards assess and benchmark the biking efforts of higher education institutions, providing actionable feedback to enhance their sustainability practices.

Announced in late October during Campus Sustainability Month, the latest BFU awards serve as inspiration for other institutions to adopt best practices in sustainable transportation. An interactive map is available to explore Bicycle Friendly initiatives across the country, detailing the achievements of universities in each state.
