Air pollution, an often underplayed menace, has alarmingly become the 6th biggest killer worldwide, accounting for 1 in 6 human deaths. This silent killer has infiltrated our lives to such an extent that it often goes unnoticed in our everyday routines.

A recent report in The Lancet Planetary Health reveals some disconcerting trends. Pollution is tied to roughly 9 million deaths annually – a shocking 16% of deaths worldwide. While strides have been made in reducing deaths linked to Pollution in poverty-stricken regions, the overall death rate has risen due to ambient air Pollution and toxic chemical exposure, a direct outcome of industrialization and urbanization.
Air Pollution doesn’t just have a human cost; it has severe economic repercussions too. In 2015 it led to an estimated $4.6 trillion in economic losses, accounting for 6.2% of the global economic output.
Despite this mounting crisis, policy action to combat this issue remains inadequate. Many policymakers don’t regard air Pollution as a pressing concern, leading to lackluster response and limited progress. This laissez-faire attitude towards Pollution, despite it claiming 9 million lives annually, remains a significant barrier to change.
As per Richard Fuller, the lead author of the report, a lack of attention to this crisis contributes significantly to this stagnation. He believes that more public outcry is necessary to draw attention to this “enormous issue”.
The authors argue for a global response to this planetary threat. Since Pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss are interconnected, their control requires a comprehensive, international effort. A swift, large-scale transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy can address Pollution and slow down Climate change, providing dual benefits to planetary health.
The gravity of the situation calls for united global action, even in the face of growing nationalism and protectionism. Air Pollution affects us all, and it’s high time we rally together to fight this invisible killer and protect human health.
